By Chief Tom Coe
August 19, 2014

At 04:17am units from Frederick and Carroll Counties were sent to the 1300 block of Coppermine Road for a reported barn fire. First arriving units from the Libertytown Fire Department found a 40' x 60' hay barn that was fully involved and threatening an additional barn. Engine 172 quickly deployed a handline to protect the exposure building. Engine 101 arrived as the third due engine, Chief 10-1 (B. Welker) was assigned by command as the Water Supply Officer and the rest of the engine crew walked back the lane to assist with the fire attack. The incident commander requested a tanker task force brining additional water to fight the fire to the scene. The assistance of heavy equipment from the Frederick County Highway Department was requested to assist in tearing the burning hay apart and to move it away from the nearby structures. The barn was a total loss however the second building that was threatened by the fire was saved. The New Windsor personnel operated on the scene for just under 4 hours prior to returning to service. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Frederick County Fire Marshals Office.
