The flu is here in Carroll County. The Carroll County Health Department has three simple recommendations for you to follow to avoid getting the flu this year.

1. Get a Flu Vaccine

There is still time to get the flu shot or Flu Mist, to help avoid getting the flu this season. If you would like more information on where you can get the flu vaccine, or more general information about the flu, please visit: www.flu.gov

2. Stop the Spread of Germs

After getting the flu vaccine, proper hygiene is very helpful in preventing the spread of the flu. Individuals should wash their hands often, and if possible avoid close contact with individuals who are sick with the flu. If you are sick, please stay home to help prevent spreading the virus to others.

3. Take Flu Antiviral Drugs IF your Doctor Prescribes them

Only take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them to you, most people with the flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antivirals. Some common flu symptoms include: fever, aches, cough, and tiredness. In addition to that children with the flu may also have diarrhea or vomiting. The best treatment for individuals with flu is drinking plenty of fluids and resting. If you are a high risk group (seniors, children, people with chronic illness, and pregnant women) and develop flu symptoms, you should call your doctor. Your doctor will decide if you need a flu test or antiviral medications. if you are prescribed antiviral medication, please immediately begin taking your medication. Due to the spread of the flu this season, you may have to contact more than one pharmacy to find your prescribed antivirals.

ONLY GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IF YOU HAVE VERY SERIOUS SYMPTOMS. These symptoms include trouble breathing, dizziness and confusion, chest pains and severe vomiting.
