Just prior to 6pm the Carroll County 911 center received a call reporting an activated smoke detector at the St Paul's United Methodist Church in the 200 Block of Main Street and immediately dispatched resources from the New Windsor Fire Department. Captain 10 arrived to find a 2 story church with nothing evident from the rear of the building. As Engine 101 arrived, the utility room of the church was found to be charged with smoke with the unmistakable odor of an overloaded furnace. Crews secured the furnace and began to ventilate the church. As the air quality of the facility was monitored it was discovered that Carbon Monoxide had made it to the upper level sanctuary. Additional fans from the station as well as Rescue Squad 8 (Union Bridge) were requested to assist with the large ventilation operation. Crews continued to ventilate the structure and monitor the air quality until all readings were negative. Units operated on the scene for just over an hour prior to returning to service.
