| At 845am calls began to pour into the Carroll County 911 center reporting a serious motor vehicle collision on Route 27 in the area of Kimberly James Court. Units from the Winfield and Mt Airy Fire Departments were immediately dispatched on the incident. First arriving Paramedic 149 reported a head on collision between a sport utility vehicle and a garbage truck with 2 occupants pinned in separate vehicles. The Medic Unit and Engine from New Windsor was quickly added to the call to assist. Chief 14-2 (T. Legore) arrived and established the Route 27 Command and advised Medic 109 to take care of the patient in the garbage truck while Engine 102 was assigned to handle the landing site for an inbound Maryland State Police Med-Evac Helicopter and to assist with the extrication. As the incident progressed Haz-Mat 30 was called to the scene to assist in containing a large hydraulic fluid leak. Crews worked for 40 minutes to free the driver of the garbage truck who was quickly loaded into a helicopter and flown to the Shock Trauma Center. Unfortunately the occupant of the sport utility vehicle died upon impact. The crews from New Windsor operated on the scene for 3 hours prior to returning to service.
