Carroll County Household Hazardous Waste Collection & Document Shredding Event Set for April 18

The New Windsor Fire Department would like to help spread the word about an upcoming Carroll County Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Document Shredding Event taking place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

This event provides residents with a safe and convenient opportunity to dispose of hazardous household materials, securely shred sensitive documents, and take advantage of medication and sharps disposal services.

(Off Maryland Route 97, north of Westminster. Continue past Meadow Branch Road to Old Meadow Branch Road.)

What’s Available at This Event?
Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Carroll County residents may safely drop off a variety of dangerous household materials that should not be placed in regular trash.

Accepted Household Hazardous Waste Items Include:
Gas and gas/oil mix
Lighter fluid
Oil-based paints, stains, sealants, and varnishes
Brake fluid and power steering fluid
Engine cleaner and degreaser
Paint thinners, solvents, and mineral spirits
Bleach and ammonia
Oven cleaners and drain openers
Acetone
Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides
Photographic chemicals
Pool and hot tub chemicals
CFL bulbs and fluorescent tubes
Household-use Nickel-Cadmium, NiMH, button batteries, lithium, and lithium-ion batteries
Mercury switches and thermometers
Vape liquids in consumer containers
Electronic smoking device batteries
Items NOT Accepted

The following items will not be accepted at this event:

Latex paint and water-based paints, stains, sealants, and varnishes
(These may be disposed of with household trash once solidified using kitty litter, paint hardener, or by air drying.)
Single-use household alkaline batteries
Explosives, ammunition, and fireworks
Medical and biohazard waste
Radioactive materials
Asbestos
Compressed gas cylinders or propane tanks
Vehicle batteries
Motor oil
Hydraulic oil
Diesel fuel
Kerosene
Transmission fluid
Antifreeze
Year-Round Recycling Reminder

Some items not accepted at this event may still be recycled year-round at the:

On-Site Document Shredding

Residents can also bring personal sensitive documents for secure on-site shredding.

Shredding Guidelines:
Residential use only
No business shredding
Limit of 3 bags or 3 Banker's Boxes
(Approximate box size: 24" x 15" x 10")
Documents will be shredded on-site and securely destroyed
Shredding is available only until the mobile shredding truck reaches capacity
Medication & Sharps Takeback

A Medication and Sharps Takeback will also be available during the event.

Supplements
Syringes
Needle tips
Lancets
Auto-injectors

Please note: No liquids will be accepted.
