Fire Prevention & Life Safety

Welcome to the New Windsor Fire Department’s Fire Prevention & Life Safety page. Our mission is to protect lives and property through education, preparedness, and community engagement. Below, you'll find essential fire safety tips, resources for all ages, and seasonal guidance to help keep you and your family safe.

 Fire Safety Starts at Home

A home fire can spread quickly—often within minutes. You may have as little as two minutes to escape. Preparation is your best defense.

 Key Fire Safety Tips

  • Install Smoke Alarms: Place alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Test them monthly and replace every 10 years.

  • Create & Practice an Escape Plan: Identify two exits from every room and a safe meeting place outside. Practice your plan twice a year.

  • Stay in the Kitchen: Never leave cooking food unattended. Keep flammable items away from heat sources.

  • Keep Combustibles Away: Store matches, lighters, and flammable liquids out of reach of children and away from heat sources.

  • Use Space Heaters Safely: Keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed.

Seasonal Fire Safety

Winter Safety

  • Maintain Heating Systems: Have your furnace inspected annually.

  • Use Fireplaces Safely: Keep flammable materials away from the hearth.

  • Check Space Heaters: Ensure they have an automatic shut-off feature.

 Summer Safety

  • Grill Safely: Keep grills at least three feet away from structures. Never leave them unattended.

  • Be Cautious with Fireworks: Attend public displays rather than using them at home.

  • Store Flammable Liquids Properly: Keep gasoline and other flammables in approved containers away from heat sources.
