By Chief Tom Coe
December 18, 2012

At 1:05am units from Union Bridge, New Windsor, Westminster, Taneytown and New Midway were dispatched to the intersection of Green Valley Road and Sheppard's Mill Road for a reported house fire. First arriving "Portable 8" (D. Nelson) arrived and reported a two story single family dwelling with fire showing and an occupant unaccounted for at a residence in the 4400 Block of Ladiesburg Road. Chief 8 (C. Green) arrived and established the Ladiesburg Road Command and the Rapid Intervention Dispatch was started while another firefighter was able to arrive and force entry to assist the sleeping occupant out of the house. Engine 101 with a crew of 6 split their personnel with a crew pulling an attack line to the rear of the residence to knock down the fire while another crew of 3 mated up with the crew of Engine 81 to check the interior of the house for fire extension. With the fire knocked Ladiesburg Road Command was able to hold the assignment with Stations 8, 10 and Ladder 5. The fire which started as a chimney fire that had extended out into the adjoining walls and attic proved to be stubborn as crews worked for the next two hours to extinguish all of the hot spots buried in the wall behind the chimney. Prior to fire crews leaving the scene, the Union Bridge Fire Department was able to install a working smoke alarm in the residence. The New Windsor Fire Department would like to emphasize the importance of working smoke alarms in the home as a tragedy was averted this morning due to the quick action of the fire department. If your home needs a smoke alarm please contact the New Windsor Fire Department at 410-635-6373 to receive one FREE OF CHARGE.
