August 23, 2026

Members of the New Windsor Junior Fire Department participated in an overnight sleep-in on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22. The event focused on hands-on training, exploring fire service history, building teamwork, and encouraging fellowship among members.

The event began on Friday evening with some water rescue training in a local pool where the Juniors work together and develop confidence and skills in the water. After the activities, members returned to the station for dinner and time to relax as a group. The evening concluded with a screening of the firefighter-themed movie Ladder 49, marking a meaningful close to the first day's activities.

Early Saturday morning, the Juniors’ plans for a full night’s sleep were interrupted by a structure fire alarm. This provided members with insight into the unpredictable nature of life in a fire station. Following the incident, the group prepared breakfast together before departing New Windsor to visit the Fire Museum of Maryland.

During their visit to the museum, the Juniors explored the history and development of the American fire service. Exhibits allowed the group to see how firefighting equipment, communications, and tactics have changed over time. A highlight of the trip was the chance to tour the Baltimore City Fire Department fireboat Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., the city's first diesel-powered fireboat. The Juniors observed a unique piece of Maryland fire service history and learned about the important role fireboats have played in protecting Baltimore’s waterfront. Members also learned about emergency call systems used before today’s 911 centers and radios. The Juniors saw municipal fire alarm call boxes and learned how they once notified firefighters about emergencies throughout the community.

After visiting the museum, the group returned to the New Windsor Fire Department for lunch. The weekend concluded with firefighting gear drills, giving members additional hands-on experience.

The two-day event offered much more than training. It helped members strengthen teamwork, learn about the traditions of the fire service, and further develop skills that will prepare them for future opportunities in emergency services. The Junior Fire Department extends its thanks to all those who made the two-day event possible, including senior advisors, department members, and the C and D shifts with the Carroll County Department of Fire and EMS.

The New Windsor Junior Fire Department is always welcoming new members between the ages of 12 and 18. Participation is an excellent way to earn community service hours needed for graduation. For more information, please visit "Joining the Junior Fire Department" under the Recruitment tab.
